Post COVID-19 EdTech Trends

For the past 4 months, everything has been on a standstill due to the pandemic. Covid-19 is a tragedy that has affected not only the economic flow but also the academic sector. Learning has been advancely affected, and the learning institution in particular due to the fact that this disease is a virus that is airborne transferred.

This means that people interacting in public places are more likely to be infected. For this reason, it led to the closure of all learning institutions. There was no more option left, but for people to embrace digital learning as a way of learning. This is what is popularly known as educational technology or simply EdTech. To date, learning has been conducted remotely without having to attend classes physically. This is remote education, and because, it happens when students are in the comfort of their homes, it can be called home education. Virtual learning has greatly been embraced in all levels of learning. All a student needs to do is to have educational software. This educational software is accessible using edtech mobile. This is simply a mobile phone that has been installed with educational software. For connectivity, the student and the lecturer both need to have internet access. Once you have these, you are good to kick off learning. It’s time we all embrace digital learning as this is the new shape the globe is taking. The world is moving towards the digital era, and so should we academically in order to equal the task.

Educational technology

For these reasons, edtech has become part and parcel of each learner. In most of the countries, learning is taking place as usual. eLearning is the most known mode of education learning. It can simply be defined as learning conducted through electronic media. Some of the eLearning platforms and their types include:

  1. Coursera
  2. Udemy
  3. edX, and
  4. Udacity.

Let’s now look at some of the trends that are as a result of digital learning. There are known as edtech trends.

Distance Learning

This can be termed as any learning where the teacher and the student are in different locations. Where the lecturer records a lecture and uploads it for the students to attend to, it can also involve real-time where the lecturer and the student can interact. In real-time, both the student and the lecturer have to be present while in recorded they both don’t necessarily have to be present. This is mostly applicable for university students and is termed as a remote university. All a student requires is an edtech mobile that has been installed with education software. It is also a convenient way since both the student and lecturer don’t need to meet physically in cases where there is conflict over meeting time. The lecturer can apply the recorded methodology and upload it. Students can get to attend the class at their own convenient time. Another advantage is that one can attend classes in any part of the world. The Covid-19 pandemic has led to the closure of most of the cities. Some have suffered from total lockdown. With the embracing of education technology, learning continues uninterruptedly.

Internet of Things

This is what is simply known as IoT; it is literally everything being connected to the internet. Today, the use of edtech mobiles and gadgets such as robots has been embraced significantly. IoT means that even the basic things we interact with are connected to the internet. The spread of coronavirus led to IoT being embraced significantly. The use of virtual whiteboards where students get to write and view it. It also entails conducting class practicals virtually. For example, it is by the use of IoT that one knows a plant needs watering. The use of IoT is one of the edtech trends that is significantly rising as a Covid-19 edtech trend. In the near future, everything will be digitalized, and that’s the power in the Internet of Things. Anything can be IoT enabled.

Online data and cybersecurity

Today, most of the students, if not all, store their information in the cloud. This is an easier method since data can easily be shared. Data stored in the cloud and can be easily retrieved even for the case where an edtech mobile is lost or damaged. Students using the remote university as a norm of students can upload the data to the cloud. Lecturers can also upload assignments issued in the cloud. This way, students can download the task, complete it, and upload it back for marking. This is what remote education mainly entails. However, the use of the cloud has its benefits. It also comes with some of the disadvantages. The main disadvantage has been cyberbullying. This is whereby confidential information is accessed. This information may include; passwords, date of birth, edtech mobile PIN, email addresses, and phone number. The acquired information is later used to manipulate you or others. Most of the learning institutions are putting measures to ensure their data is safe; this way, it will greatly make home education a success.

Gamification in education

This is whereby when a student participates in online learning classes; it increases their scores and leader scores. This has aided remote education and in students’ participation. This way, it ensures that every student is attentive and available for remote universities. Teachers are on the frontline to embrace gamification as an edtech trend. This way, a student is able to boost their motivation.

Studying with the virtual reality help

It also creates a learning environment and forms an interactive class environment. Here students get to ask and answer questions, and every participant is awarded points. This makes students be on their toes, making the learning session lively. It also boosts attendance, thus making education technology a success.

Accessibility

To ensure there are equality and equity among all learners, learners with special needs have also been considered. These are students with any form of disability. Edtech has been in the frontline to ensure that their needs are also considered. Measures have been put in their edtech mobile, and special education software has been developed to aid in their learning.

These measures include:

1.Uploading of audio recordings and sermons that are meant to aid the visually impaired learners. This is to ease learning, considering they cannot see written articles unless they are led to them.

2.The use of video recording whereby a learner can access it later. This is of great help, especially to learners who have attention issues. A learner can get to skip, pause, rewind, or even repeat a video to understand the video concept fully.

3.The use of specialized education software is differentiated according to age, subject of interest, and topics. This gives a learner to read a topic or subject of interest. This will make both remote education and home education interesting.

Data Management and Analytics

Data management has become as convenient as the advancement in technology is taking a new shape. Teachers can now issue homework to students; students can also be issued with assignments and examinations which are timed and monitored. Teachers can now monitor how students carry out assigned tasks without cheating or failure to attempt using edtech mobile. This is done by the installation of education software by both the student and teacher and this way; they ensure there is proper home education. This ensures that a student’s class performance can be tracked, and also it becomes easier for teachers and lecturers to continue with class modules without interference. It also makes it easier for teachers to identify students who are academically weak and assign them extra time for learning.

Studying remotely

Based on the above edtech trends, it is evident that education technology, despite having negative implications, has positive implications that outweigh the negative. It has also led to the embrace of advanced technology, especially in the education sector. Remote education has become a dream come true achievement since for the many decade’s technologies haven’t been embraced in learning. The use of edtech mobiles and education software’s advancement has greatly contributed to this success. Home education has not only made learning possible but has also contributed to the success of remote universities globally. This has proven that if we take up the task of improving our digital learning platforms in the future, there will be no need for building standup buildings. This will not only ease the task of school construction but also save cost and time. This will also enable students to access education at any place globally without been physically available. Learning will be more effective and made convenient not only to students but also to teachers. It’s time we take up the challenge and improve virtual learning.
